Are you one of those dog owners who has to deal with the incredibly frustrating behavior of a dog who refuses to listen to you on your walks — who pulls on the leash until you feel like your arm will be pulled off, rather than simply walking quietly by your side.

A dog pulling on leash is a sure sign that they think they are running the show and that you’re only there to follow their leadership. So what winds up happening is that they pay attention to distractions rather than you, the handler…essentially anything other than you, his owner and handler.

It’s a very common problem but one that is easily solved.

What’s even more helpful is to see videos of trainers who know how to walk with their dogs so you can really watch their methods.

But more on this later.

First, we need to go over three very easy fixes for your dog pulling on leash problem.

1. The Pack Leader Harness. One of the things you may not realize is that just about every collar will actually encourage your dog to pull harder on his leash.

Instead of a typical collar, a choke chain, or a prong collar, try a different method such as a Pack Leader Harness. This device fits around your dog’s body and applies pressure when you tug on the leash exactly where it needs to be to refocus your dog’s attention back on you.

On the Internet, this type of harness is very easy to find. It’s easy to find places that sell it just with a simple Google search.

2. Learn clicker training. A clicker is sort of like the duct tape of dog training aids. It can really help you in training your dog to avoid a whole host of unwanted behaviors, so it’s worth considering learning how to use one.

Simply put, you teach your dog to expect something good to happen when the clicker sounds. Once this expectation is planted in his mind, the dog will almost instantly focus his attention exclusively on you whenever he hears the sound of the clicker.

We don’t have a tremendous amount of space in this article to go through the ins and outs of clicker training, but there are plenty of resources where you can learn the basics.

When correcting leash pulling, a clicker is useful because you can use it to stop a dog who is focusing on something other than you, and redirect that energy back to you, his handler.

3. Food rewards. Any dog owner knows the power of the food treat to mold a dog’s behavior. When using treats to stop a dog’s leash pulling problem, what you basically want to do is introduce the food to your dog, and then let the dog use his naturally powerful sense of smell to direct his attention and his movements in the direction you want.

It’s obviously a lot simpler if you can just watch this in action, so let’s get to that now.

Stopping a dog from pulling on the leash is actually a very simple process. I’ve demonstrated some of the exact techniques mentioned above on numerous TV shows, and would like to share a step-by-step video with you that shows you exactly how to correct this behavior in around 30 minutes or less.

Right now, check out this dog pulling on leash post on my blog, where you’ll find a complete video that reveals how to use a pack leader harness, a clicker, or food rewards (or all three) to train your dog to walk calmly right by your side and always listen to what you want her to do.

Online dog training has exploded in popularity in recent years, and it’s not hard to understand why.

I certainly remember a time when you had to pay through the nose and by dozens of books, DVDs, or shell out a small fortune for a personal trainer to correct your dog’s bad behavior.

But thanks to modern technology, that’s different now.

Now you can get the same personal attention that a private trainer could offer, but at a fraction of the price. The thing and it’s really great about this method, is that everything you need can be posted for you right on the Internet.

However, not all online dog training courses are created equal.

Here are a few things that you should consider whenever you are deciding between competing online dog training sites. If you just sit tight for a minute, I’ll tell you about the only online dog training course I think you should consider, but let’s stick with this topic first so we don’t get ahead of ourselves.

Let’s first go over some of the important factors you need to look at…

1.The Trainer’s Skill, Knowledge and Expertise. Now I know this sounds obvious, but it is really important so I just want to mention it again. The first thing you need to consider, and perhaps the most important factor of all, is the experience of the trainer who put the course together.

Ideally, you’d like to know that the person who is calling himself an expert really does train dogs for a living. Do they have credentials that verify their expertise? Do their former or current clients supply them with testimonials that attest to the results they’ve gotten following the trainer’s advice?

2.What’s in the Course. Now here is a warning that you need to consider — some of what’s being sold online right now has been put together by people who aren’t even professional dog trainers, and consist basically of cheap e-books that won’t do much to help you change your dog’s behavior.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that trying to learn successful dog training techniques from a book alone is often quite difficult. In my opinion, you should always look for an online course that includes video, since it’s so much easier to follow the techniques when you can actually see them being performed.

The best option is going to be to go with a course that actually shows you how to use the techniques by demonstrating them through the use of live action video.

So the only thing you need to do is copy what they’re doing and you should get a similar outcome.

3. Interaction. I would also suggest that you try and find an online course that offers some level of interaction with the trainer.

Even the very best courses aren’t going to be able to answer every single specific question that a particular dog owner has. If this should happen, it’s very useful to be able to contact the teacher and get personal answers to your questions.

Great, so now let’s get to what you’ve been waiting for, which is the link to a really outstanding online dog training course that satisfies all of the points mentioned above. Visit this online dog training post on my blog, where you’ll learn about how to get access to a free trial of the best obedience training that you’ll find online.

And if you hurry, for a limited time you can also get a free dog training CD just for stopping by.

I hope you found this useful, and I look forward to hearing how you make out

House Training a Dog

Do you believe that house training a dog can be stress-free? Well, I do. If you can teach your dog how to tell you when he needs to go outside, house training a dog becomes simple and fun. Teaching your dog to ring a bell when he needs to go out is one of my favorite methods.

…All and dogs enjoy playing games and learning new tricks.

The “Ring a Bell to Go Outside” method helps you to get your dog to do exactly what you want but for him to think that it was his idea all along! In order to teach your dog how to ring a bell to go outside, simply follow these simple instructions.

(By the way, if you want to see a complete step-by-step video on how this is done, visit this house training a dog entry on the Best Dog Ever blog. It’s fantastic!)

*Step 1. Find a bell. Use a light-weight bell. (Don’t use a heavy metal cow bell.) Remember to consider the size of your dog when you’re choosing the size of the bell. (For example, a dachshund will need a bell that smaller than a Labrador retriever would need.)

*Step 2. Hang the bell from a door knob …within easy reach of your dog’s nose. (Don’t forget that what exactly nose level is is going to be different for different breeds.)

*Step 3. It’s important to remember that you need to say “outside” before taking the dog out? Do you want to go outside?” As and you’re on your way out the door, jiggle the string so that your dog will bump into it and make it ring. (You might need to shake the bell a bit so the dog can hear it ring.) Repeat for a few days.
This step associates the sound of the bell with a behavior – go outside to do your business.

*Step 4. When your dog isn’t watching, go ahead and take your bell and just put a little bit of peanut butter or soft cheese on it.

*Step 5. Now what? Well, wait and watch. Now, two things are possible …and both are behaviors you’re looking for!
Some dogs immediately smell the peanut butter, go to the bell, and ring it..
Perfect! Say “Outside?” …open the door, walk over to the potty area, and say “Go potty.* Now it’s time to reward your dog when she potties by giving her lots of praise and a treat.

Other dogs might have to be encouraged a little bit more if you want them to find the bell. If this is something that happens to you, there’s a way around it — simply hold the bell close to your dog’s nose so that he wants to lick it, and rings the bell.

You might have to shake the string tied onto the bell so that the bell makes a couple of rings if the dog’s tongue barely moves the bell.) As the bell rings, you want to say “Outside?” … So now it’s time to get the door open, take the dog directly to the potty area, and say “go potty.”

While the dog is pottying, softly repeat saying “go potty.” Then, you should reward your dog with a treat and praise.

*Step 6. Once the dog can ring the bell easily without assistance from you, that’s when it’s time to ask him “Outside?”…now simply wait by the door for the dog to touch the bell and ring it. Next, it’s time to take the dog outside to go to the bathroom.

Learning the right strategies for house training a dog is good for dogs of all ages! Don’t forget that older dogs will often times need more frequent bathroom trips. …But the bell reminds us.

Certain dogs, like rescue dogs for example, who may have never lived in a house, are quick to learn the difference between inside manners and outside behaviors.

If you want your dog to live in your house with you, and you don’t have a doggie door, this trick will keep your home accident free. I love to use this trick whenever I’m traveling with my dog as well.

All you have to do is remember to bring the bell with you and attach it to the door of your motel room. …you can forget about having to worry about accidents!
